Biography

Sophie holds a Bachelor of Music in Performance from the QLD Conservatorium of Music and a Master of Music from the University of Melbourne. In 2016 Sophie participated in two European summer courses with Emily Beynon, Thies Roorda and Rien de Reede. Sophie has played flute and piccolo on three tours to China with both the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra and the Australian International Opera Company and also toured to New Zealand with the Melbourne Youth Orchestra. In Australia, Sophie has performed with groups such as the Australian and Asian Orchestra, Hopkins Sinfonia and NOW Flutes. Sophie is currently studying a Master of Arts (Arts Management) at RMIT and is the General Manager of the Melbourne Metropolitan Sinfonietta.

 

Biography (extended)

Sophie Weston is a Melbourne based flautist who completed her Masters of Music at the University of Melbourne, Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts and Melbourne Conservatorium in 2012 under Derek Jones. Her Bachelor of Music in Performance was guided by Gerhard Mallon at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Griffith University. Sophie has played flute and piccolo on three tours to China with both the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra and the Australian International Opera Company.  Sophie performed at the 2015 Australian Flute Festival with the progressive ensemble NOW Flutes presenting a program of entirely living female composers. She also performed Mahler's Resurrection Symphony in Christchurch, with the Melbourne Youth Orchestra and members of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in 2014. In 2016 she attended two European summer courses with Emily Beynon, Thies Roorda and Rien de Reede. Sophie is currently studying a Master of Arts (Arts Management) at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and is the General Manager of the Melbourne Metropolitan Sinfonietta.
